How Nurses Help Attorneys
Hi, my name is Nina Latting. I am a Registered Nurse, Legal Nurse Consultant, and founder and president of Insight Medical-Legal Consulting.
Here is a sense of who I am:
A neurosurgeon moved his practice into the community, and received privileges at the hospital where I worked in the intensive care unit. It was clear early on that this neurosurgeon was not amenable to civil communication with nurses, especially on the night-shift..my shift of choice.
I called the physician, according to protocol, to update him on changes in a patient’s condition. Boy, did he read me the riot act! In fact, in far less than civil terms he went on to say that the care being provided in the intensive care unit was far behind any other hospital where he had practiced. Wow!
On my drive home the next morning, I began questioning if I was really providing care by less than the most up-to-date nursing standards.
- Had I (and the hospital) missed some new practices that had evolved into the standards of care?
- Were our protocols out of date?
- Was my provision of care to patients lacking because of that?
To search for the answers, I found a workshop for neuro-ICU nurses. The workshop was presented by a world-renowned teaching hospital within reasonable driving distance of my home. In the workshop, I quickly learned that the physician was wrong. The protocols and care provided to the neuro patients where I was employed, were actually the same as utilized and taught by that world-class teaching hospital.
Could I have presented my questions to the ICU director or the hospital’s education department? Yes, but I wanted to find the answers by my own research. That’s just me.
Preparation for Legal Nurse Consulting
Every moment of my more than 35-year nursing experience, in conjunction with my personality, caused me to cross paths with the amazing branch of nursing that is Legal Nurse Consulting. My experience across my body of work in nursing and life proves to be an awesome foundation for my Legal Nurse Consulting business.
Decades of clinical experience have afforded me various settings and opportunities that (for me) planted seeds of Legal Nurse Consulting including:
- Extensive, cooperative and collaborative interactions with physicians and other healthcare providers
- Rendering care to many, many, many patients in urban, suburban, and rural settings
- Documenting and reviewing countless paper and electronic medical records
Over time, the development of my nursing practice has come full-circle from:
- Bedside nurse in a 200-bed Skilled Nursing Home to
- Intensive Care Nurse to
- Home Health Nurse to
- Surveillance Nurse for Long-Term Care.
For as long as I can remember I’ve asked questions…never necessarily comfortable with the status quo.
- When an expected outcome occurred, I wanted to understand why.
- When an unexpected outcome occurred, I definitely wanted to know why.
If I found myself questioning whether I was providing the best possible care for the patients who depended on me, I dug deeper to clarify the truth – for myself.
